Chilkat park cabin now available for rental
November 17, 2022
Haines’ only official public use cabin is now available for nightly rentals at Chilkat State Park.
Reservations can be booked through Alaska State Parks’ website. A stay costs $60 per night.
The Glacier View Cabin, as the facility is named online by Alaska State Parks, is about a mile and a half down Chilkat State Park Road, on the left past the entrance to the park’s campground. Through winter the park gate is closed, so the cabin is accessible only by foot – “hike, ski, snowshoe, toboggan, hop, run or skip,” said Parks Southeast area superintendent Preston Kroes.
The cabin has a bunk that fits two people, but it can hold up to eight in total. “Users must bring sleeping bags and pads or whatever they need to sleep comfortably,” Kroes said.
The cabin has a wood stove but not enough firewood to depend on, Kroes said. He advised renters to bring their own wood, noting, too, that volunteers Tom Morphet and Joe Parnell donated a supply to the cabin.
There is an outhouse near the cabin. Whether it has toilet paper will depend on how much users leave behind, Kroes said.
“Basically, it is set up like all of our other public use cabins in the region — bring whatever you need to stay and be comfortable, and take whatever you bring back out with you.” Kroes said. The cabin can be booked at alaskastateparks.reserveamerica.com.
