Teams representing Haines and Klukwan are performing well at the Juneau Lions Club 74th Gold Medal Basketball Tournament.
The Klukwan team in the C Division is 2-0 and plays Thursday for a spot at the championship. The team includes Jesse McGraw, Andrew and Brian Friske, Stuart DeWitt, Daniel Stickler, Kent Larson, Daniel and Jeffery Klanott and Bryan Combs. They defeated Yakutat in their first game and Kake in their second.
"The Yakutat game was close," McGraw said. "They played hard. Before that they had a chance to tie the game and ended up missing. It was a three point game with seconds left. They didn't get a good shot off and we got the rebound and Andrew made the free throw."
Klukwan's Masters Division team, composed of Charlie Spud, Daniel Hotch, Russ Stevens, Jeff Sharnbroich, Dave Buss, Neil Erickson, Jason Shull, Scott Forbes, Eric McCormick, Frank Cornell and Pete Dohrn, defeated Hoonah in their first game and play Kake for a spot at the championship.
"We're playing pretty good together," Spud said.
Haines' team in the B Division, composed of Tyler and Dylan Swinton, James Hart, Max Graham, Bryce Wortman, Kai Franks, Kirby Faverty and Jordan Baumgartner, is 2-1 defeating Yakutat and Kake and losing to Hydaburg. Their Thursday victory over Kake advanced the team through the loser's bracket. Tyler Swinton said his team was short players for their first two games.
"We'll have to do the old time masters thing and make our way through the losers bracket," Swinton said Tuesday. "Haines has won a lot of championships making their way through the losers bracket."
