What is a drag queen?
April 6, 2023
According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, "a drag queen is distinct from a cross-dresser because the motivation of dragging is typically not sexual" and "dragging involves the performance whereby the intent is an undoing of gender norms through doing (or dressing) the part of the opposite sex." I looked it up, because I've heard a lot of claims lately about what drag is or isn't.
An individual's motivation to become a drag performer is, of course, unique in each situation. I've hesitated to give my opinion because I've never done drag. But most of the people who have asserted that drag is "inherently sexual" probably haven't, either. (My apologies if I am incorrect in this assumption.)
When I think of drag queens, I think of people who have overcome gender stereotypes and the social pressure to blend in and accept the status quo. I think of people who are actively combating the poor self-image and lack of self-confidence endemic in our society. I admire that, and I think it sends a powerful message to the rest of us struggling not to criticize and overanalyze the face we see in the mirror. I wish there had been more role models like them when I was in middle and high school.
Aren't we trying to teach our kids to love themselves for who they are? To be kind to others, especially when they are different from us? I say welcome Juneau Drag. I'm here, with my inner child, ready to learn.
