The Glacier Bears girls track team won third place at the Capital City Invitational track competition last weekend, with several athletes and teams ranking first, second or third in their events.

The Glacier Bears brought 27 competitors to Juneau where they competed against Sitka, Ketchikan, Juneau-Douglas, Thunder Mountain, Yakutat, Skagway and Petersburg on the Thunder Mountain track and field.

Sophomore Emma Dohrn took first in the shot put and discus competitions and third in high jump. Head coach Jessie Sanders said Dohrn’s performance makes for a very promising start as a young competitor.

Eric Brouillette placed first in disc, MacKenzy Dryden placed first in the triple jump, and Luke Davis took first in the 800-meter dash. Runners Dryden, Grace Long Godinez, Avari Getchell and A’riel Godinez Long ranked first in the sprint medley relay, a new event this year. “Each one of them would be a top three in any event we put them in,” Sanders said. “Those four are really, really good athletes.”

The returning 4x400 relay girls team that won state last year took second place at the track meet. Sanders said they added freshman Sarah Jones to the team and are still working on making clean baton handoffs to improve their time.

“Our handoffs and exchanges were not very clean but they were only three seconds off their best time last year,” Sanders said. “If we can clean up those exchanges, we’re very excited about that relay. They took second.”

Grace Long Godinez took second in the long jump. Davis took second in the 1,600-meter dash. Seth McClurg took second in the 110-meter hurdles.

JC Davis took third in the 300-meter hurdles. Brouillette, Phoenix Swaner, Koa Doddridge and Luke Davis took third in the 4x400-meter relay.
