Swimmers qualify for state championships
May 4, 2023
Six Haines Dolphins qualified for the Alaska State Swimming Championships this weekend, and five Dolphins struck personal best times. This is the first time in nearly a decade that this many Dolphins have qualified for the state championships, Dolphins coach Sydney Wray said.
"They're a good group of kids who work really really hard," Wray said. "They had a phenomenal meet."
Sita Price, 11, improved her 100-yard by more than 18 seconds. She achieved a personal best in two of her three events.
Jonah Wray, 12, was the highest scorer on the Haines team. He swam a personal best in three of his six events.
McConnell Robinson, 14, shaved roughly 13 seconds off of his 200-yard freestyle. He swam a personal best in four of his five events.
Lucia Chapell, 16, swam a personal best in six of her seven events. She credited her success to having competitors to push her.
"Living in Haines, we don't get much opportunity to race against a bunch of people," Chapell said. "I think it's just a special opportunity to really have competitors and people pushing you."
Despite his goggles falling off mid-swim, Evan White, 10, swam a personal best in two of his three events. His goggles have fallen off every meet, he said. Wray said he has begun practicing without goggles to prepare for the inevitable.
The Dolphins had the highest percentage of best times out of 17 teams from across the state. This is the final meet for the Dolphin's club swim season.
