It's Monday morning, and Holly Davis sings to her audience. She makes drum noises and plays with scarves for the children, all less than 1 year old, and their appreciative parents.
Davis is the youth coordinator for the Haines Public Library, which holds readings and other events at 11 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Monday event is an introduction to books, as she holds them up and reads to the youngsters.
Then she starts another song.
"Down on the banks of the Hanky-Panky, where the bullfrog jumps from bank to bankie with a hip, hop, flip, flop, leap off a lilypad and go ker-plop!" Davis sings with a very soft voice as the toddlers crawl across the floor.
Davis also posts some of her events on the library website, https://haineslibrary.org/, so people who can't make it to the sessions at the library can still watch.
This Friday, the library will host Los Angeles children's author Stuart Gibbs, who will discuss his "Spy School" books and other stories in three sessions at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The following Friday, the day after graduation, the library will host a magician, who will help kick off the library's summer reading program.
That program gives youngsters prizes for reading a certain number of books over the summer, and local people donate toward the prizes, said Mae Stevens, library technician at Haines.
