Tips for helping Fido cope with the 4th
June 29, 2023
If you love fireworks and your dog, there are steps you can take to keep your pooch happy on the Fourth.
Loud noises can be upsetting, particularly to dogs who sometimes panic or run away at the sound of fireworks.
CaSandra Nash, animal care assistant at Haines Animal Rescue Kennel, said the most important care for boom-sensitive dogs is to keep them indoors, preferably in a dark room that is familiar to them.
“Some dogs need cuddling. Others just need to be in a familiar place that’s cozy. I have a dog that would lay down in the bathtub. Every dog is different,” Nash said.
HARK sells a product called “Rescue Remedy,” a liquid medicine that is touted as helping dogs stay calm. Other products and advice are available through vettriage.com. Live vets at the site also might be able to prescribe over-the-counter products that are helpful, Nash said.
