Robert Loomis, Vietnam Veteran dies at 73

Robert Martin Loomis, 73, was born on Jan. 1, 1950 in Wrangell, Alaska. He moved to Haines, Alaska, when he was 12 and graduated from Haines High School. He passed away on May 17, 2023 at his residence in Kilgore, Texas, surrounded by his family.

He joined the Army and served during the Vietnam War, Dec. 1968 - Nov. 1971. Robert was an aircraft turbine engine repairman who worked on Skycrane helicopters. While there, he took a master conservation course.

He started a business in Haines called B&J Auto Supply, where he sold auto parts, gas and did mechanic work. On occasion, he did backhoe and dump truck work. Later he got his six-pack charter license so he could take people fishing. He received certificates in diesel mechanics, welding and rebuilding transmissions. For many years he did paint and auto body work and later drove trucks.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to church, and watching movies. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Ellen Loomis. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Nancy Mulyca Loomis of Kilgore; sons Jesse Loomis and Mark Loomis of Kilgore; grandchildren, Alycia Ballard, Sarah, Micah, Callie, Caden and Bella Loomis; sister, Bonnie Loomis; brothers, Craig Loomis and Jerald Loomis; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held for Robert at New Covenant Church, South Campus, 5621 FM 2087, Kilgore, TX 75603. Cards may be sent to PO Box 3312, Kilgore, TX 75663.
