Manager's accusations are inappropriate

July 13, 2023

I was surprised to learn from reading the latest copy of CVN that Haines Borough manager Annette Kreitzer was publicly accusing me of trespass.

According to the “Heliport decision under scrutiny” story in the July 6 edition, Kreitzer claimed she could not use a photo I took showing illegal heavy equipment construction work on George Campbell’s property on the bank of the Little Salmon River “because it was clearly taken by trespassing and you can not use a photo taken by trespassing.”

The borough manager provided no evidence for this accusation to me or the CVN, and her position holds no authority to investigate or enforce trespass laws. It’s inappropriate and unprofessional for her to make such unsubstantiated accusations.

Unfounded speculation aside, Ms. Kreitzer is not excused from her obligation to enforce borough law. Ms. Kreitzer has clear evidence that the Campbells have violated the conditions of their conditional use permit, which prohibits construction on their heliport within 25 feet of salmon streams.

Additionally, the CVN reported that Kreitzer said the Campbells’ continued development of the Little Salmon River is only associated with the airstrip, and not the heliport, even though their CUP appli-cation indicates their heliport location is immediately adjacent to the Little Salmon River.

Since the Campbells have clearly violated the conditions of the permit, they forfeit any right for a heliport CUP to be a part of this property. It is the borough manager’s legal obligation to formally revoke the permit. Erika Merklin
