Drilling at placer mine proposed at Porcupine Creek
August 31, 2023
A Washington-based company submitted a placer mining application to the Alaska Department of Natural Resources at Porcupine Creek. RGD Mining Company Inc. said it plans on drilling ten five-inch holes between 50 and 100 feet deep to take samples. The application doesn’t say what the company is looking for.
RGD is a for-profit corporation owned by Mike Robinson. When contacted by CVN, Robinson said “I have no idea what’s going on right now,” in regards to the permit application and declined further comment.
According to the application, the sonic drilling will be done by Liam Ferguson of Northern Sonic Drilling and Consulting. Ferguson could not be reached for comment, but the application states that the claim block will be accessed via the Dalton Trail between May and October, and does not cross any bodies of water. A maximum of 100 gallons of petroleum products will be stored in jerry cans, 500 feet away from flowing waters.
“There will be no impact to fish, wildlife or cultural resources,” according to the application.
The deadline for the public to comment is Sept. 8 at 5:00 p.m. Written comments can be addressed to Sara Church at 907-458-6896 or e-mailed to dnr.fbx.mining@alaska.gov.
