Experience is not always an asset

September 28, 2023

Incumbent candidates point to their experience as a central reason to be reelected. But what has been the community’s experience over the last few years? The Lutak

Dock hasn’t been properly maintained. The neglected sewage treatment plant is still out of compliance. The Public Safety Building is rotting. The expanded harbor still has no new floats. Despite the lack of code-required support of nearby residents, after-the-fact permits were issued for a heliport. A major excavation in a landslide-prone area was allowed without rational consideration of public safety and welfare.

Engineering studies, grant applications and staff time, to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars, have been spent for projects many people in the community

don’t support or haven’t been asked about for years. These incumbents want to spend several million more in local funds to rebuild a dock that has no projected

users — if we take their word that the project isn’t about subsidizing international mining companies. Meanwhile, well-researched reports on the Lutak Dock rebuild

project, the impact on local roads from ore-transport, and the history of impacts from large-scale resource extraction projects on rural communities have never been

discussed by our elected officials. Let’s give some new folks with new ideas and a vision for the future the chance to create a better “experience” for all of us. I’m

voting for Natalie Dawson, Kevin Forster and Craig Loomis for assembly, and Tom Morphet for Mayor. I hope you will too.
