Laurie Mastrella takes in a net during the fall recycling program. Nets are shipped to a company called Net Your Problem in Seattle that turns them into other products like rain gear and other products. "I believe in recycling in general and since I produce a lot of net waste through my work, I wanna see it recycled," said Mastrella, who works as a net mender. Haines Friends of Recycling charged $25 per net, which is less than what it costs at the landfill, but nets were required to be cleaned with the cork, weed, and lead lines detached.
