November 22, 2023

The Haines Glacier Bears volleyball team wrapped up their regular season with a regional tournament in Gustavus after a tough season.

The Glacier Bears lost to Petersburg in three sets.

Coach Hailey Sanders said the final loss was hard, especially since the team was missing a few of its normal starters. Still, she said the girls got props for their attitude at the event.

"The team got many outside compliments from other coaches and players about their volleyball skills- but what I'm most proud of was the comments about how respectful, kind, and helpful our Haines student athletes are," wrote Sanders.

The Bears finished with a 1-8 record, according to maxpreps.com.

The team's sole win came over Craig on Nov. 3.

Still, Sanders said the team worked hard and is looking forward to next year.

Sanders said the team will graduate two seniors this year.

"I'm so proud of the time, energy, and hard work these girls put in day in and day out. We will miss our two seniors- but the team is already talking about strategies for improving our game next season!" she wrote.

The Gustavus Foxes won the tournament, the Region 5 Mixed Six Volleyball Championship.

The team lost to Kake on Thursday before coming back in the losers' bracket to take win four straight games.
